amarna style: characterized by having movement in the figures in the art, founded in the 18th dynasty.

 

engaged column: a column that was a part of another piece of architecture such as a wall or building, often provided support and decoration

 

hierarchy of scale: the manipulation of space and size in a piece to emphasize something as being more important than the rest.

 

hieroglyphics: symbols used by Egyptians to show certain events, ideas or objects.

 

hypostyle: a structure or building with many columns. in situ: in its natural or original place.

 

ka: a spiritual being that was believed to live inside the body during life and survive after the body has died.

 

mastaba: a rectangular tomb made of mud-bricks with sloping sides and a flat roof.

 

necropilis: a large cemetery or burial ground.

 

papyrus: an aquatic plant found by the Nile river which was dried in strips that were put together to make a material on which to write; a sort of ancient paper.

 

pharaoh: an Egyptian king.

 

pylon: an immense, eccentric tower for the entrance to an Egyptian temple.

 

reserve column: a column that serves no function.

 

sarcophagus: a coffin made of stone that was often highly decorated or inscribed and was usually displayed as a monument
